Primesure Newsletter: Winter 2025

Kia Ora and welcome to our winter newsletter

Another few months have swept by already, and we hope you've managed to stay warm (and dry!) through these colder times. In this edition of our newsletter, we’ve got a quick update on the insurance market and some practical info about recent changes — including the retirement of our client portal, a roadside rescue benefit now available with NZI commercial vehicle policies and a look at what’s coming through Parliament that could affect your liability cover. We’re also spotlighting one of our clients and sharing some of the ways we’re supporting the I Am Hope charity, and how you can also get involved (golfers, this one's for you). Plus, if you're on LinkedIn, we’d love you to follow us there too. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please reach out to me or the rest of the team, we're always happy to help.

Cheers, Cam

The insurance market: A quick mid-year industry update

We’re seeing more competition between insurers in the commercial space, and that’s allowed us to negotiate sharper premiums for some of our business clients — especially those with strong risk profiles and a good claims history.

On the personal insurance side (home, contents, and vehicle), costs are still trending upward for many, with some insurers increasing premiums again this year. We’re keeping a close eye on this and reviewing pricing wherever we can.

As always, we’re here to make sure you’ve got the right cover, at the right price — and that you feel looked after along the way.

If you’d like a more detailed breakdown of what’s happening in your sector or region, just speak to your broker — we’re happy to talk you through it or send more information.

Client Portal No Longer Supported

A quick heads-up: our client portal will be getting retired shortly and will no longer be in use. We hope to be working with our software supplier to design a new one in the future. If you need a copy of your policy, certificate of insurance, or an invoice — just flick us a message or give us a call, and we’ll get it sorted.

Resource Management Law Change: What it Could Mean for Your Liability Cover

Update on the Resource Management (Consenting and Other System Changes) Amendment Bill
New legislation could change how fines are handled under Statutory Liability insurance

If your business holds Statutory Liability insurance, there’s a legislative change on the horizon that could affect what’s covered — particularly around fines for breaches of the Resource Management Act (RMA).

The Resource Management (Consenting and Other System Changes) Amendment Bill is currently progressing through Parliament and is expected to become law later this year. One of the key changes proposed is to make it illegal for insurers to cover RMA-related fines.

What does this mean for you?

Right now, most Statutory Liability policies (including NZI’s) cover:

  • Legal defence costs

  • Fines imposed for RMA breaches

Once the new law is in place:

  • Defence costs will still be covered

  • Fines will no longer be covered, even if a claim was already open before the change

That means any fines issued after the law takes effect will likely need to be paid by you or your business directly.

What should you do?

If you’re currently involved in an RMA-related matter, please get in touch so we can help assess the impact.

Take extra care around environmental and consenting obligations — especially if you operate in construction, farming, land development or similar sectors.

If you’re unsure whether your current liability cover still meets your needs, we’re happy to review it with you.

We’ll continue to keep you informed as the legislation progresses.
